2 Pieces of Lunchbucket Trivia

1. Gordon Pinsent was in town today, filming some thing or other written by that radical Anne of Green Gables Sarah Polley.

2. Today is the anniversary of Foster Hewitt's first play by play broadcast of a hockey game in 1923. One between the Toronto Parkdales & the Lunchbucket Greenshirts at the Mutual St. Arena. The game went into 3 overtime periods! Unfortuately, my sources can't tell you who won.

In a past life was Lunchbucket Kitchener and in an even paster life, Berlin? Was it then, the Berlin Greenshirts? You mean Foster Hewitt was already broadcasting hocky games 12 years before I was born?

I can't say what Lunchbucket was once called. That would be giving it away! But I believe there is still a Greenshirts team...Junior B or C maybe.

This Kitchener to which you refer was indeed once named Berlin, but the name was changed in 1918 or something like that. Before Foster Hewitt.

And yes! 12 years before you were born. (But he also died before you, too...

Not sure that came out right...you know what I mean...

I thought that Foster Hewitt was still reporting the Hockey games, first years I was In Canada, somewhere sixties? Was that maybe his namesake son? If so, he's not among the living anymore either? Also died before me too? :)

Never heard of Greenshirts before. But hey, that's no surprize. Me not paying much attention to sports.

Indeedy, Foster was calling games into the sixties. In fact, he worked the famous 1972 Canada-Russia summit. His son, Bill, was also a hockey broadcaster, but in TV only. Foster died on April 21/85. He was only 89.

So if he died 1985 and was 89 years old, he must've been born, take away 89 from 1985, brings it back to 1896. And when he started broadcasting hocky games in 1918, he must've been 22. Phew, how's my math? Took me a while. He's been with the hocky then for 67 years? That's a loooooooong time.

Help! I've written and I can't get up!
